Humane Society of The United States (HSUS) Leaning Against Pet Ownership!

Just in case anyone is thinking of donating to the Humane Society of the United States ( HSUS ), there is some very interesting information available on this organization. They may lead you to believe that they are an Animal Welfare organization, but actually they are an Animal Rights group!    There is a big difference! Animal Welfare groups like the local Humane Societies (which are not connected to the HSUS in any way!) work for the welfare of animals wild and domestic, while Animal Rights groups actually believe that animals have the same rights as people and should not be used by humans at all. INCLUDING AS PETS!

In 1986, John McArdle, then-HSUS director of laboratory animal welfare said that "HSUS is definitely shifting in the direction of animal rights faster than anyone would realize from our literature."

HSUS vice president Michael W. Fox has said in 1990 that "humans aren't different. We're not superior. There are no clear distinctions between us and animals."  and also said that "the life of an ant and that of my child should be granted equal consideration."

Wayne Pacelle, HSUS’s vice president of government affairs and media said, "We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of selective human breeding."

According to the article "The Humane Society of the U.S.: It's Not about Animal Shelters" from the Capital Research Center in Washington D.C., many of the employees of the HSUS are former employees of such animal rights groups like PETA, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), The Fund for Animals, and the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), and have granted money to Animal Rights groups like, Animal Rights Community, Animal Rights International, the Committee to Abolish Sport Hunting, the International Society for Animal Rights, the New England Anti-vivisection Society, and the World Society for the Protection of Animals.

Advertisements lead people to believe that this organization is connected to local Humane Societies and they are not! They lead the public to believe that they are an Animal Welfare organization and they are not! They are an Animal Rights organization!

Although the Humane Society of the US is working with GM and SAAB to benefit the HSUS through the sales of pet safety equipment in cars and with groups like The Animal Fair ( A Pet Owners Group-http://www.animalfair.com ) and Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation ( http://www.tlr-arf.org/index.html ) , the fact of the matter is that they are working against these groups to abolish pet ownership completely!

"“The humane movement has been hijacked, radicalized, and rerouted. Started more than 100 years ago, it was traditionally concerned with the humane treatment of animals. In the last 20 years, however, it has been taken over by animal rights leaders whose priority is neither the humane care of animals nor the prevention of cruelty to animals, but instead, the promotion of a revolutionary value system which redefines man's relationship with other animals. Animal rightists want to end man's use of animals altogether.”

This is from a book called "Hijacking of the Humane Movement" By Rod & Patti Strand, dog breeders with 24 years experience. Read a review by The National Animal Interest Alliance (http://www.naiaonline.org/body/articles/archives/hijack.htm).

So any pet owners who think that they are helping their local Humane Societies by donating to the Humane Society of the United States are being extremely mis-lead! Their money will be used to further the movement to abolish pet ownership completely!

Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation ( http://www.tlr-arf.org/index.html ) and The Animal Fair ( A Pet Owners Group- http://www.animalfair.com ) are both connected to HSUS and I have notified them of this unusual alliance.

The Humane Society of the U.S. Blasts Bowana

This letter was sent snail mail to me personally:

April 17,2000      The Humane Society of the United States

The e-mail which you recently circulated entitled "Pet Owners Beware of the HSUS" is grossly inaccurate and misleading.

The HSUS is an animal protection organization not an animal rights organization. We are not a vegetarian organization; in fact, we promote non-factory farms that use humane animal husbandry practices. The HSUS is not an anti-vivisectionist organization.  (Ed. Note: anti-animal testing, I had to look it up!) We promote humane treatment of animals used in research as well as the use of alternatives to animal testing where appropriate. We do not oppose all uses of animals for any purpose as you assert.

I will not rebut all of the factual inaccuracies of your e-mail, but you should know that much of the information you cite is false, outdated, or otherwise misleading. For example, you use a quote from John McArdle  that is 14 years old. That quote represented only Dr. McArdle's personal opinion and was never an accurate statement of The HSUS's policies. Moreover, Dr. McArdle hasn't worked for The HSUS for well over a decade.

Similarly the quote from Wayne Pacelle, is taken totally out of context and does not relate to companion animals in any way. Years ago, Mr. Pacelle was asked at an agricultural forum whether there is a responsibility to preserve all rare breeds of livestock. Mr. Pacelle stated that he did not think we needed to preserve all rare breeds of livestock; rare breeds go extinct on a regular basis. Your use of that statement in a context implying that The HSUS is opposed to pets is a total distortion Pets were not even a topic at that forum. To be absolutely clear, Mr. Pacelle does not oppose pet ownership; he lives with three cats as a mater of fact.

The notion that The HSUS opposes pet ownership is patently absurd. One of the largest sections in the organization is the companion animals section, the staff of which is focused solely on improving the relationship between people and their pets, and on assisting local shelters in their efforts to protect pets in their communities You have only to look at our Web site for proof of our commitment to companion animal issues.

The HSUS has expended great effort and care in formulating its positions regarding the appropriate role of animals in human society and in advocating these positions to the public and representatives of government. Accordingly, we take communications that intentionally misstate our positions very seriously-

We trust that this letter has clarified our positions to you, and that you will now cease publishing false and damaging communications regarding the HSUS.

Sincerely

New England Regional Director

The Humane Society of the United States

Bowana Blasts Back at the HSUS!

TO: New England Regional Director for the HSUS

RE: Your Reply to my E-Mail "Pet Owners Beware of the HSUS"

Your first point was that the HSUS is NOT an Animal Rights Organization, but an Animal Protection Organization. Maybe the majority of workers at the HSUS believe that and work for that cause, but over all the direction of the HSUS is leaning towards "Animal Rights"!

The first Affiliate listed on the HSUS website is The Center for Respect of Life and Environment. "CRLE was founded in 1986 to foster an ethic of compassion toward all sentient beings and respect for the integrity of nature." Now this sounds good, but in reality, an ant or a bug are "sentient beings" and everyone is bound to step on one or hit one with their windshield!

The CRLE websight also has this quote listed several times on the site, from Thomas Berry, "The universe is a communion of subjects, not a collection of objects."

Another affiliate is the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education (NAHEE), which is the youth education division of the HSUS. In the Student Network News section you list Hot Books and Cool Sites and the third book is a book on a diet to reduce heart disease and cancer, and it promotes not eating any animal products. Then the next book is "Saving Molly", a research veterinarian "Sees The Light" and stops doing animal research!

Now onto the "Cool Sites". The first is the NAHEE's parent site the HSUS website. Then NAHEE lists the E-Magazine, The Environmental Magazine. This magazine reports that 69% of it's readers polled, ate lower on the food chain since reading the magazine. Two of the editorial advisors are Dr.. Michael W. Fox and John A. Hoyt, an ex-vice president and president emeritus of the HSUS respectively!

Another Cool Site listed is The Farm Sanctuary, a site that is against animal exploitation for food production and promotes Veganism which is more then just vegetarianism in that this is a humanely ethical way of life and avoiding eating any food from animal origin.

``Basically we're dedicated to cruelty prevention, wherever we find it,'' said Gene Bauston, the vice president of Farm Sanctuary, "The animal rights movement, observed Bauston, is divided between those ``who don't think any animals should be harmed for any reason, and animal welfare advocates who feel that animals may be humanely raised for food or clothing. We kind of blur that line. We have our dream of a world in which no animal suffers, but we are also willing to be pragmatic, to do what we can here and now to alleviate the suffering that exists.''

And now the best "Cool Site" listed, The Animal Rights Resource Site (ARRS), according to the HSUS Student Network News this site may be the definitive online hangout for teens interested in animal protection!

Animal Protection? Look at the name "ANIMAL RIGHTS"!

Quoted as being The Animal Rights Connection! And this on the HSUS's own Teen Scene website. Is this how we want to teach our children?

Then The HSUS Student Network News profiles Patrick Kwan, a self-proclaimed animal activist, another kid taking the "Vegan Lifestyle" and also fighting against class dissection and animal testing. The HSUS says they understand the need for medical research with animal testing but then they showcase a kid with these beliefs!

As for the quotes from Dr. McArdle and that his personal opinions don't reflect the policies of the HSUS. It seems that Dr. McArdle was correct in saying that "the HSUS is shifting towards Animal Rights" and  when you have people like Michael W. Fox who said in 1990 that "the life of an ant and that of my child should be granted equal consideration" and others from PETA, The Fund For Animals, and The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals working for your organization, do you really believe that these people left their "Animal Rights" beliefs behind?

We teach our children that the friends you chose reflect on you and this goes for the HSUS as well. The HSUS has hired many people from animal rights groups and granted money to many other animal rights organizations, and since the HSUS is doing this they must agree with these people's beliefs!

I also believe that your Companion Animal Program is a wonderful program. Bringing loving pets to the sick and the elderly. I am sure that most of the people doing this are volunteers and I wonder if they realize that the HSUS spends 40% of their overhead on administration and fundraising. You spend a lot of peoples' donations on getting more donations. A money machine to keep the checks coming!

How can a non-profit "Humane" organization have a couple officers making over $200,000 a year and many more making around $100,000 a year?

You people complain about having to euthanize 4 to 6 million cats and dogs a year, but 40% of your overhead goes to more fundraising and you pay your organizations' officers hundreds of thousands a year. The majority of the people giving you their hard earned dollars could only dream of making that much money!

For a Non-Profit Organization, there seems to be a lot of profit floating around!

Right now a lot of shelters will not give a pet to a household where no one is home during the day. In todays world most couples both have to work, so if a husband and wife work then they can't adopt a dog. My family and I have had several dogs and cats, and they were left home alone during the day. These animals were great animals and did no damage. Why deny an animal a home when the alternative is euthanasia?

As for your position on pets. The HSUS may want to save the pets that are alive now, but if every responsible pet owner must neuter their pet, then where will the next generation of pets come from? Will your organization judge who is allowed to have litters, and also who is allowed to have these pets when they are born?

The Humane Society, Not Such A Great Society!

After several stories on the Humane Society over the past years, the Humane Society of the United States replied with a letter to me. Some have questioned why I have targeted the Humane Society. Well the fact that what the HSUS claims is not what they really portray on their website or in their fundraising programs, it bothers me that people are donating to an organizaton that may not be what they expect!

In the HSUS's letter to me requesting that I "cease publishing false and damaging communications regarding the HSUS", they made several statements. They stated that "The HSUS is an animal protection organization not an animal rights organization", that "We are not a vegetarian organization; in fact, we promote non-factory farms that use humane animal husbandry practices.", and that "The HSUS is not an anti-vivisectionist organization. (anti-animal testing, I had to look it up!) We promote humane treatment of animals used in research as well as the use of alternatives to animal testing where appropriate".

1st The HSUS is an animal protection organization not an animal rights organization.

Well by the list of employees who came from extreme animal rights groups, I doubt they left their beliefs and motives behind. Also the amount of links on the HSUS website that leads to sites promoting animals rights!

2nd We are not a vegetarian organization; in fact, we promote non-factory farms that use humane animal husbandry practices.

Well again I showed several direct links from the HSUS website to sites that promote Veganism and Vegetarianism.

Also if you remember the lawsuits against Oprah for comments about hamburger, the guy on the show and involved in the lawsuit along with Oprah was Howard Lyman. Howard Lyman made his money as a cattle rancher and then found a "New" way and began a Vegan Lifestyle!

He became a Director of the Eating With Conscience Campaign of the Humane Society of the United States. His job is to "travel around talking to people" trying to convince them to "use zero percent animal products."

"Zero Percent animal products", doesn't sound like they "Promote non-factory farms" at all!

3rd The HSUS is not an anti-vivisectionist organization. (anti-animal testing, I had to look it up!) We promote humane treatment of animals used in research as well as the use of alternatives to animal testing where appropriate

Talk about being "grossly inaccurate and misleading"!

HSUS SHOWS ITS STRIPES
November 16, 1998

The Laboratory Animals section of the Humane Society of the United States has become more active in criticizing research in the media recently, clearly inaugurating the public relations stage of its campaign to end all pain and distress in laboratory animals by the year 2020.

From the Americans for Medical Progress news page:
http://amprogress.org/news/archives/archive7.htm

Seems that not only are these HSUS employees great at fundraising and collecting decent paychecks, but they are pretty good at lying too! Not Good enough though!

Here are some caring animal activists form 1996

When I sent this story out originally I received several letters from people involved in Animal Welfare and they all agreed that the HSUS is not what they pretend to be!

Several letters came from people who run shelters, and are always battling the HSUS for donations. The big national name gets the funds even though these other groups run "NO KILL" Shelters!

Not only do these people NOT GET PAID, but many times they use their own money to keep animals alive!

Where would you rather see the money go?

Please read these two stories and let SAAB and General Motors (half owners of SAAB) know that supporting extremist anti-hunting groups is something that sportsmen can just not tolerate!

General Motors owns half of SAAB and is planning to exercise GM's option to buy the rest. Maybe GM can straighten this out and return to the the American Way that supported GM and GMC with their work and sports Hunting vehicles! Let's hope that General Motors brings more of an "American" view to SAAB's lousy Public Policy!

Genral Motors truck division is connected with horse racing since GMC's Sierra is the Official Truck of the American Quarter Horse Association. I don't think that some of these Animal Rights organizations are going to like supporting horse racing which they consider to be inhumane to the animals!

SAAB GOES COMPLETELY ANTI-HUNTING

SAAB GOES COMPLETELY ANTI-HUNTING

SAAB is supporting the Animal Fair Magazine's Animal Fair Auction on the SAAB website and the proceeds will be going to a couple Companion Animal Rights groups and THREE COMPLETELY ANTI-HUNTING ORGANIZATIONS!

These Anti-Hunting Organizations actively fight hunting laws, State Fish and Game Departments, and State Wildlife agencies! One of these groups spent a lot of money in NH to fight our own NH Fish & game Departments Youth Hunting Day! If not for sportsmens money there would be no flyways for ducks and geese, Bald Eagles would not be back in NH, along with coyotes and wild turkeys, just to name a few!

Here is the Animal Fair Auction site: http://auctions.animalfair.com/

Here are the six organizations that will benefit from this auction and SAAB's promotion of it:

American Humane Association (ANTI-HUNTING)
The AHA serves as the only organization with the jurisdiction over the treatment of animals used in television and movies.
Here is the American Humane Association's Anti-Hunting Policy:
http://www.americanhumane.org/animals/policy/ap_policy.htm

Animal Rescue Foundation (Companion Animals)
Founded in 1991, Tony La Russa’s organization rescues animals and places them in temporary homes with volunteers who act as “foster parents”.
Appears to deal with "Companion" animals:
http://www.tlr-arf.org/index.html

Fund for Animals (ANTI-HUNTING)
The FFA, founded in 1967, takes a two-prong approach to ending animal abuse, using both hands-on animal care and hard hitting advocacy programs like the world-famous Black Beauty Ranch.
Here is the Fund for Animals' Anti-Hunting Policy:
http://www.fund.org/facts/index.html

AND The Fund for Aniamals actively fought NH Fish & Game on Youth Hunting Day

Wildlife Conservation Society (No Stance on Hunting)
Founded in 1895 as the New York Zoological Society.
Headquartered at New York City's Bronx Zoo, the WCS works to save wildlife and wild lands throughout the world.

World Society for the Protection of Animals (ANTI-HUNTING)
The WSPA, often the only hope for animals in times of disaster, works in co-operation with more than 300 member organizations in 70 countries. The WSPA has been awarded consultative status with the United Nations.

SAAB and the Humane Society Join Hands

Saab U.S. has announced an association with The Humane Society of the U.S. by offering pet safety devices for their line of cars. Ten percent of the sales of these pet safety accessories will be donated to the Humane Society. I friend of mine pointed out that one of the higher priced options on Saabs is the leather seats!

A lot of the upper management in these animal rights organizations drive around in top of the line cars, I wonder how many are sitting on Leather?

Below is the letter that I sent out to Saab U.S. and to the Saab dealers in NH. (I wonder which they will get rid of, the Humane Society or the seats?)

SAAB Leather Seat Option may be OUT!

TO: Dean Hill Motors- Claremont, Gary Blake Saab- Exeter, and Saab Nashua North- Merrimack NH

RE: SAAB Leather Seat Option may be OUT!

Saab should re-think this collaboration with the Humane Society of the US! This is an extremist anti-sportsman group that will use every dollar to fight sportsmen pursuing a legal activity!   Keeping pets safe while traveling is an honorable goal, but to connect your company with a radical group like this is un-forgivable!

Please continue pet safety, but get rid of that Anti-Sportsman Organization that you have connected Saab to, before they TARNISH your reputation!   This organization accuses state wildlife commissions of boosting wildlife population just to hunt them, and also believes that euthanasia is a necessary tool to control shelters' populations. I have seen pictures of deer in Virginia near Washington D.C., that looked so starved and all you could see were ribs! (even in pictures)

So KILLING thousands of dogs, cats, and other miscellaneous animals is acceptable by them but not for hunters and fishermen who will be feeding their families and others as well!

Unwanted Pets: To Kill Or Not To Kill? http://www.channel4000.com/news/dimension/news-dimension-990715-220039.html

I wish that you would fight this association that your company has created and try to continue seeking pet safety but with a more reasonable group!   AS long as this association continues, I will not buy any of your products and will inform ANYONE who owns, wants to own, and even people who don't want to own one, where some of their money will end up!

NH has a LOT of sportsmen and women who will not be very happy with this arrangement!

A woman just came down from a tree after two years living in it to save it from being cut down. She was using a cooking stove in a tree, and a cell phone that has a battery that is considered hazardous waste and must be disposed of properly (with all the batteries that tree sitter used, do you think they "disposed" of them properly?) but look at us in disgust for wanting paper and wood products to be available at a reasonable price!

Save Trees, Eat Vegetables!  Why is it terrible to cut trees, but OK to eat vegetables?

It is like what Rush Limbaugh said the other day "Dolphin safe tuna, great for the dolphin, but NOT SO GOOD FOR THE TUNA!" (That was great!)

Now the Humane Society associates with a car company that pollutes the air with exhaust, runs on a liquid that pollutes the water, and has animal skin on it's seats!

Let's hope that General Motors brings more of an "American" view to SAAB's lousy Public Policy!

SAAB's Reply on Their Relationship with the Humane Society of the United States HSUS

Subject: Reply from Saab Cars

Ken,

Thank you for e-mailing to express your concern regarding our relationship with The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Saab Cars USA, Inc. and The HSUS share a common concern for pet travel safety. Therefore, our association with The HSUS focuses specifically on our joint interest in promoting safer travel for pets and their owners.

Saab's real-life safety philosophy, which stipulates that safety systems and structures in Saab vehicles be designed to protect occupants in real-world collisions, extends to all Saab occupants including pets. Pets are subject to the same safety hazards as their owners when traveling unrestrained in a car. In addition to injuring themselves if left free to roam in a moving car, they can injure occupants during an emergency evasive maneuver or in an accident. They can even be the cause of an accident. Therefore, Saab offers a custom-designed line of accessories — including restraint systems — to help improve pet travel safety and comfort.

Saab Cars USA, Inc. neither endorses or opposes specific HSUS initiatives outside of our mutual interest in pet travel safety. We hope you understand that our relationship with The HSUS is specifically designed to help us effectively communicate this message to millions of pet owners.

Sincerely,

Dan Chasins

President and COO

Saab Cars USA, Inc.

RE: Are there any pet owners at SAAB?

This is from the HSUS Humane Society of the United States website on pet population control:

"Is it Possible for Such a Huge Problem to be Solved?

YES. But only by implementing widespread sterilization programs, only by spaying and neutering all companion animals, will we be able to get a handle on this problem."

Can I Breed My Pet if I Find Homes for All the Offspring?

NO. Remember that each time you place one of your pet's puppies or kittens in a loving home, you take away a home from another companion animal who is desperate for someone to take him/her in. The sad fact is that there are already more companion animals than homes, and each day animal shelters are forced to destroy thousands of dogs and cats because no one wants them.

Must I Sterilize My Pet to be a Responsible Pet Owner?

YES. Sterilization is an important part of being a responsible pet owner.

Are There Simple Steps I Can Take?  YES. First prevent a litter. "

From: http://www.hsus.org/programs/companion/overpopulation/op_fs.html

They are obviously not going to come out and print it but occasionally one of these employees says it, like the Vice President of government affairs and media said, "We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of selective human breeding." and another HSUS vice president Michael W. Fox said in 1990 that "humans aren't different. We're not superior. There are no clear distinctions between us and animals."  and also said that "the life of an ant and that of my child should be granted equal consideration."

These are NOT the views of pet owners, they are the views of Wildlife Lovers Only, and kill anything that didn't occur naturally or in this case try to legislate people into neutering all domestic animals and only rescue abandoned ones. Then when the abandoned ones are neutered first then released, eventually there will be NO DOMESTIC ANIMALS LEFT!

Don't you people at SAAB realize that your customers' money is going to an organization that wants to put an end to pet ownership altogether?

The HSUS doesn't believe that animals should be used by humans at all. They are against pet ownership, horseback riding, animal farms, and even fish tanks!

There are SAAB dog owners, Saab cat owners, Saab horse owners, Saab hamster owners, Saab ferret owners, and even Saab animal farmers, and NONE of them realize that they are supporting an organization that is using their money to promote stopping the practice of owning pets and "using" animals for any human benefit!

I HOPE THERE IS AT LEAST ONE PET OWNER AT SAAB THAT MAY POSSIBLY SEE THE LIGHT!

Why not find another true Animal Welfare organization that really does support pet ownership?

Please do not send the standard HSUS reply that you do not necessarily support every program of theirs, because in truth the HSUS's main program is to end animal usage by humans completely!

The first affiliate listed for the HSUS is the CRLE "Center for Respect of Life and Environment" and was founded in 1986 to foster an ethic of compassion toward all sentient beings and respect for the integrity of nature. This is the quote on their front page:

"The universe is a communion of subjects, not a collection of objects. - Thomas Berry"

From: http://www.crle.org/index.html

How much evidence do you need?

AGAIN, Please do not send the standard HSUS reply that you do not necessarily support every program of theirs, because in truth the HSUS's main program is to end animal usage by humans completely!

FIND A NEW CHARITY!

BODY COUNT:The Death Toll in America's War on Wildlife!

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and The Fund for Animals

Calling on Hunters to End their War on Wildlife!

The biggest victim is the international symbol of peace, The morning dove!

“Hunters want us to believe that hunting is necessary for wildlife management,” said Michael Markarian, executive vice president of The Fund for Animals. “But if we respect the Earth and respect the environment, we will stop this carnage once and for all.”

Illustrating this point, “Body Count” documents that the mourning dove, the international symbol of peace, is the leading victim in America’s war on wildlife, as hunters kill 35 million of the harmless birds every year, 26 percent of hunting’s total victims. White-tailed deer, whose alleged “overpopulation” is often used to justify all hunting, constitute fewer than 5 percent.

“With 134 million animals killed every year, it’s time for sport hunting and commercial fur trapping to be recognized as serious environmental issues,” said Norman Phelps, program coordinator for The Fund for Animals. “We have to broaden our concern to include the sentient beings with whom we share the environment.”
